I did this trade to get ready for TBD's run at the World Title next year. I will have arguably two of the best SP's in the game. With the emergence of Brandon Moss and the rather large salary of Carl Crawford, he became expendable. Iwamura wasnt in TBD's plans for next year as we will be bringing up Evan Longoria next year.Price and Shields are both great pitchers, but we are getting upgrades for both.

Twins accept. Rays and Twins officials worked well into the night to finalize this deal. After striking up a good relationship with Twins officials in the Rocco Baldelli deal just a few days ago, the Rays came calling again trying to seal the deal on one of the year's blockbuster moves. The Twins give up two of the games best left-handed starting pitchers and two good prospects. Santana, enough said, but he does carry a nearly $12 million contract. Francisco Liriano will return to full strength next season to help the Rays contend with the Red Sox and Yankees. Chris Parmelee was the Twins best CF prospect and David Winfree gives Tampa Bay a much needed prospect to groom behind eventual all-star Evan Longoria. In return the Twins receive a much cheaper James Shields to head the pitching staff and he will welcome the increased run support the Twins line-up can provide. David Price is the top left-handed prospect in the game. He is coming off the DL and will go straight to the majors and be slotted as the #3 starter in the Twins rotation. The Twins have been begging for additional offensive help all season. They finally land a legitimate offensive weapon in Carl Crawford. Crawford will take over the leadoff duties for Minnesota and manager Ron Gardenhire described him as the total package, "like having another 3 hitter at the top of the order. When guys like Tyner and Bartlett get on at the bottom of the order Crawford will definitely drive them across the plate. Akinori Iwamura was the last piece of the puzzle for the Twins' drive to the playoffs. 3B Jeff Cirillo's production has fallen off in the last month or so and Iwamura provides a good glove and OBP for Minnesota's line-up. Who wouldn't want a line-up including, Crawford, Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Torii Hunter. Yes, the loss of Santana is significant but to gain high rewards you must take great risk.
