If a player is unhappy, he will test free agency. You can still resign him in free agency, but he may become coveted, and if so, you are sure to pay much more than you would've if he were happy and you resigned him during the season. You can see if a player is unhappy or not by clicking their smile face. If it doesn't say something positive about your team, or at least say that he is content, then he will declare for free agency.
